The Maverick Gaming Centre is hosting the highly anticipated 3rd annual VS Gaming Rocket League Championship. This tournament marks the end of another long VS Gaming season where a champion will be crowned. Throughout the year, teams have battled in four cups to qualify for LAN with each cup hosting a R3000 prize pool. 16 teams qualified for the championships but only 11 teams will be present at the LAN so the competition will be even tighter. We caught up with the team captains but first, let’s look at the format for this year.

Format Overview

The tournament kicks-off at 12pm SAST on Friday 25th October with an intense group stage. 11 teams are split into groups of 5 and 6 where they will compete in a Round Robin format – only 4 teams from each group will move on to Day 2. Day 2 consists of GSL groups where those 8 teams are split again into 2 groups where the top 2 from each group moves forward. Day 3 will be a tight single elimination battle to decide the eventual winners. This format change is one that has been suggested by the community and there is no room for mistakes here. Every team will have to perform at their best in every single match-up if they want to get to the finals. Each day will be streamed on the VS Gaming YouTube channel with casters Ryan “Deaded Horseborn” Hogarth and Christopher “Crip” Almond to take you through the action.

  1. Why did you decide to compete with your current teammates?

The 2019 year for Rocket League South Africa was quite turbulent with many teams chopping and changing throughout the season, ours is no different.

A month before lan it was decided that the team was going to split up with Mr.Low looking to join with Timmy_JS and li0n_za, myself and PwnFlakes looked around for a 3rd and found Bread to be the perfect fit to form the VE Serpens team.

  1. What are your expectations for LAN?

With the 2019 VS Lan being the first lan of its nature that myself and Bread are attending our expectations are high. As a team we are preparing for a high level of competition and expect close games throughout the weekend.

  1. Which teams are you most looking forward to playing?

Of course there is an organic rivalry between VE Serpens and Carfind VIDERE stemming from the fact that we are from the same org so naturally we look forward to coming up against them and seeing what we can do. In addition to Carfind VIDERE, we look forward to playing Exdee Gaming as they always bring tough games that are fantastic to watch.

  1. How have you been preparing for LAN?

As a team we haven’t been together for too long having been formed just over a month before lan and so our focus was mainly to get game time with each other, try work out some synergy and get a feel for what we do well and what we needed to work on, this boiled down to playing a lot of scrims and going through replays to refine our play.

  1. What do you expect/hope to see in the future for RLZA?

In the short term we would like to see more teams joining the scene and a general increase in the overall skill among the players. In the long term we hope to see a vibrant and competitive Rocket League scene in South Africa and the rest of Africa as a whole.

Seed 3: VXP | SALVAGED PROFICIENCY

Line-up:
Joshua “YoPeGo” van der Merwe (captain), David “Happymeal” du Plessis & Umar “Werty” Rasool

  1. Why did you decide to compete with your current teammates?

Me and werty met on an EU online match about two years ago, and we became friends ever since. As far as Happymeal goes, we had played before in privates and they both invited me to join their squad, as I was unhappy with my current team at the time. We have been together for about two years now.

  1. What are your expectations for LAN?

I think it’s gonna be fun. It will be nice to meet all the people we play against weekly on VS and momentum, and I am meeting my teammates for the first time as well. I think it will be fun and go smoothly!

  1. Which teams are you most looking forward to playing?

xD, iVe, and Carfind Videre.

  1. How have you been preparing for LAN?

Practicing 3v3 ranked every day, playing with the team daily in scrims and ranked games, practicing training packs to get my eye in for the games to come.

I hope to see more involvement in lans, and have more people get better at the game to have some proper intense competition and rivalries.

Seed 5: [VE.] CARFIND VIDERE

Line-up: Lorenzo “Mr.Low” Fransman (captain), Leon “li0n_za” Havenga & Timothy “Timmy_JS” Santos

  1. Why did you decide to compete with your current teammates?

I have been in and out of teams this year. First starting with Papa Capes and Magoo in Jan/Feb, but then left that team due to them not playing as much as I’d like and I thought it would be a good move for me to grow as a player. So I teamed with Pwn and Mt, but as of 2 months ago, they were not playing that much either and Mt was actually going to retire. So I had to look for a new team and decided to get Lion and Timmy. I know from a while back that they’re quite cool in comms and we have lots of laughs. So this team is good because we have fun but I also think we can win LAN with this team.

  1. What are your expectations for LAN?

After recent scrims, I expect us to place 1st. I have confidence in my teammates and our synergy that we could pull through and end up with that W. With more practice for the rest of the week, we’re either first or second place.

  1. Which teams are you most looking forward to playing?

I’m mostly looking forward to playing Exdee, IVE and Videre Serpens. All these scrims are close and the games are fast paced which makes it more fun and enjoyable.

  1. How have you been preparing for LAN?

Mostly just freeplay and scrims with the team. We have been avoiding EU because we’ve noticed how it affects our gameplay. Only playing local servers has improved our gameplay by a lot. So that’s what we’ll keep on doing until Day 1 of Finals.

  1. What do you expect/hope to see in the future for RLZA?

The main thing I hope to see is bigger orgs getting involved with our community and picking up teams. I think if Bravado or Energy Esports, for example, picks up RL teams, it could bring a huge change in the scene. However, I just want to see more players getting involved and actually playing the game or 6mans to show that we do deserve more sight and orgs to invest in us.

Seed 6: MONKEY RAGE GAMING

Line-up: Ian “Mooiaapie” Pretorius (captain), Francois “Inquisitor” Matthee & Raynard “ReaperZA” Pienaar

  1. Why did you decide to compete with your current teammates?

I decided to play with my chosen teammates, due to them being incredible players and decent individuals. We enjoy playing together, because we all understand the frustration of the game. We as individuals want to improve our own skill, but together as a team.

  1. What are your expectations for LAN?

Our expectations for Lan is just to try our best as a team and have fun.

  1. Which teams are you most looking forward to playing?

Neither, to be honest. If I had to choose it would be OPXD. I say OPXD because, they consistant with what they do and how they play. They have good team work and very skilled individuals.

  1. How have you been preparing for LAN?

We have been playing a decent amount of games over the few weeks, where we try to work on different mechanics within the team and work on bettering our individual plays.

  1. What do you expect/hope to see in the future for RLZA?

Better teams. Better players. People helping others to improve. To create a better community.

Seed 7: 7 CAR PILE-UP

Line-up: Jaco “Rektbeard” Zwarts (captain), Niel “Frostbite” Grimbeek & Andries “AngryPanda” van der Walt

  1. Why did you decide to compete with your current teammates?

We are IRL friends, and we’re trying to get as big a group of friends  as possible to LAN which we kind of succeeded with. Being mates with mother from xd(hes also our unofficial coach) as well as fortitude and pwnflakes  from videre

  1. What are your expectations for LAN?

We’ll be super stoked to make day 2, but other than that we don’t really have any expectations

  1. Which teams are you most looking forward to playing?

We’re in a pool with the reigning 3time, so that’s going to be interesting and we’ve got a bit of a friendly rivalry between ourselves and RK.Hatchlings, who are also in our pool, so we’re stoked for that game too

  1. How have you been preparing for LAN?

No real preparations other than a few scrims. Only really started practicing hard in terms of scrims since last week as we don’t really have massive expectations as mentioned earlier

  1. What do you expect/hope to see in the future for RLZA?

I’ve heard some negativity lately about the future of RLSA, which I’m not going to elaborate on too much, but it would be awesome to see RL back at the big events with the other games

Seed 8: INNOVATION ASCENDANCE

Line-up: Herman “H4mburger” de Beer (captain, sub), Michael “Falacer” Griffiths, Niel-Robèrt “SkillSteal” Burger & David “ShadowHunter” Robinson

  1. Why did you decide to compete with your current teammates?

The current roster was made after WSG Sirius disbanded leaving Falacer and Skillsteal without a 3rd and an org just before LAN. I decided to offer our LAN spots and org so that they could play at LAN, as they are top players in the scene.

  1. What are your expectations for LAN?

I am expecting big upsets, as well as closely contested finals on day 3 between the top teams.

  1. Which teams are you most looking forward to playing?

Seed 9: RK.HATCHLINGS

Line-up: Chace “Chace” Green (captain), Jordan “VindictiveRabbit” Taschner & Kyle “CarRL” Twomey

  1. Why did you decide to compete with your current teammates?

CarRL and myself have been playing together for about a year alongside Skeksys, we’ve always kind of just clicked, and now with the recent addition of Vindictive Rabbit we growing even faster becoming a team that’s a force to be reckoned with.

  1. What are your expectations for LAN?

Coming in as a lower seed teams may underestimate our ability, we’re hoping for some upsets. But most of all we coming to have a blast and just grow as Rocket League players.

  1. Which teams are you most looking forward to playing?

It’s always an experience playing against exdee, but I think Fortitude and MRG in our pool are going to be tough matches but I believe we can take them

  1. How have you been preparing for LAN?

Multiple coaching sessions alongside hours and hours of practice.

  1. What do you expect/hope to see in the future for RLZA?

My personal hopes for RLZA is that it grows exponentially, seeing larger Rocket League tournaments should get more people into the game so hopefully it will be booming soon! I expect to see more participation in tournaments with more teams taking part pushing South African Rocket League forward.
